I have been told my business is high risk. This is a very common answer that our merchants receive when they have applied with a regular bank or processor. Some businesses are considered high risk depending on two major factors; poor history and/or the type of industry of the business.
High Risk Due To History:
Businesses or principles with bad credit are candidates for a high risk account. Companies with a high number of disputes, chargebacks, returns, complaints or negative customer feedback would be considered high risk.
High Risk Due To Industry:
Certain types of industries are considered high risk, no matter what the personal history is of the business or principle. These industries are considered high risk by the higher than average history of chargebacks that follows the industry or customer complaints. Fraud is also a factor for businesses being considered high risk. Customers making purchases from company websites then charging them back or customers using stolen cards. These industries would be considered high risk by Visa and MasterCard.
Most merchant account providers do not want to assist are unable to assist high risk business with finding real, long term high risk solutions. Companies being setup with a low risk account for a high risk business will be shooting themselves in the foot. These processors will impose large upfront reserves, low volume caps and at the first instance of slightly higher chargebacks their account will be closed and all monies will be held for six months.
